UCR Sloan Center for Internet Retailing Networking Workshop

The UCR Sloan Center held a research networking workshop on May 3-4, 2007, at the historic Mission Inn in Riverside, California.  The workshop was limited to 20 attendees, 13 of whom were asked to prepare thought-provoking 15-minute presentations that dramatically deviate from the usual research talk.  Presenters were asked to introduce what they considered to be “the most intereresting under-addressed research question in Internet marketing.”

Goals of the workshop were to bring together a small group of behaviorally and quantitatively oriented scholars researching topics related to Internet marketing to:

  • Promote awareness of the joint community’s common research interests;
  • Identify exciting new research themes that can serve as the basis for future collaborations;
  • Introduce scholars to the UCR Sloan Center for Internet Retailing and opportuntiies for direct interaction and research collaboration with industry partners.

Deliberative Dialogue with Professor Rick Staelin (Duke University)

The Department of Management and Marketing is hosting a “Deliberative Dialogue” with Professor Rick Staelin, the Edward and Rose Donnell Professor of Business Administration at Duke University, on Friday, April 6, 2007. 

Professor Staelin has served as the Deputy Dean of the Fuqua School, the Associate Dean for Executive Education, the area coordinator for the marketing department, and is currently the Executive Director of the Teradata CRM Center at Duke (more info at: http://www.fuqua.duke.edu/faculty/alpha/rstaelin.htm).

As part of the Deliberative Dialogue Series, Professor Staelin has been invited to spur debate within our department as to new directions in the field, areas in which to build faculty strength, and provide his perspective on the broad issues and themes our department should be considering. 

The dialogue will begin at 3pm, with a reception on the AGSM Lawn to follow immediately after at 4:30pm

Improving Research Productivity

Professor Barbara Kahn of the Wharton School gave a very important speech addressing research productivity during her presidential address at the recent Association for Consumer Research conference in Orlando.  She looked at the ways that ACR could help make a difference in our academic lives and conducted a survey of the membership to get a better handle on the kinds of problems we all face in trying to be more productive - and impactful - researchers.

Her observations and conclusions are really interesting (and highly useful in resource-based arguments with university administrators).  Have a look.

Experiments that would take months can now be carried out in days. But ours is not an ideal world. Researchers wrestle with fickle software, challenges to experimental design, and a host of other problems.

UCR Marketing is recruiting!

The A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Riverside invites applications for up to four full-time tenure-track faculty positions as Assistant Professor in Marketing to begin July 1, 2007. We seek candidates with highly sophisticated research training who can demonstrate the potential for outstanding accomplishment and scholarly distinction in marketing. Research area is open but preference will be given to candidates with strong methodological training and behavioral research interests. Teaching opportunities are available at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.  Candidates must have the Ph.D. or expect the degree to be conferred by the date of appointment. 

File review will begin June 1, 2006. First consideration will be given to candidates who apply by the application deadline of September 1, 2006

Sloan Center moves to UCR

The Sloan Center for Internet Retailing officially moved to the University of California, Riverside on July 1, 2006.   Professors Donna L. Hoffman and Thomas P. Novak, formerly of Vanderbilt University, will co-direct the UCR Sloan Center.  The UCR Sloan Center is supported by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and corporate partners, including founding partners Walmart.com and Lands' End.   (Press release).
