Viral Video Immunity? I Favorited the T-Mobile Wedding Video, But Not T-Mobile

You might have been one of the millions of YouTube viewers who this weekend watched the hilarious, and of course "contagious," viral video in which a fake Prince Wills and soon-to-be-Princess Kate dance to East 17's "House of Love" as part of their wedding procession. The T-Mobile video, presumably shot via a cell phone, cleverly markets the product's video sharing capabilities with…See More

Twitter Abuse: The Story of Bar La Grassa and That "Biggest Loser" Guy

Bar La Grassa, a popular eatery in Minneapolis, recently drew the ire of a celebrity Twitterer (Bob Harper of "The Biggest Loser" fame), and faced the consequences. Basically, through an intermediary at American Express, Harper was looking to nab at the last minute a table for five at Bar La Grassa; unfortunately for him, it was a Saturday night, and the place was booked. The…See More

Poking the Government: Social Media and The Revolution in Egypt

Jon Stewart followers may have already heard this quip on "The Daily Show" days ago:  "If two speeches and a social media site is all we needed to spread democracy then why did we invade Iraq, why didn’t we just, I don’t know, poke them." It's a funny and cynical take on the power of social media to topple governments that had me laughing outloud. But with that said, I still wouldn't outright dismiss the utility of a Facebook post or tweet in the recent Egyptian revolution.  Egypt of course has…See More

Mark Manalang likes "Mark Zuckerberg as TIME's Person of the Year"

As you may have already heard, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was recently named Person of the Year by TIME Magazine. (I suppose I should give up on my delusions that I will be named Person of the Year again, as I was back in 2006; that was of course when "You" won the honors). There's been quite a bit of vitriol on the net since the announcement, which has me quite dumbfounded. Perhaps I need to go…See More

The Groupon Craze

As you may have heard in the news, there's this little company called Groupon that recently generated quite a bit of buzz over (eventually failed) acquisition talks with Google. Admittedly, I'd never even heard of the company until just a few weeks ago when one of my bosses at the UCR business school gave me the heads up. Word is that it's the next big thing, and businesses should leverage it as part of their online marketing strategy.

Dubious but curious as to…
