Many if not most new product or service offerings fail to achieve their hoped-for market acceptance or do so only after long and expensive trial and error. To improve these odds, some companies have begun working more directly with customers to “co-create” innovations. This raises the question: Who are the “best” consumers to engage in this way? Some look to “lead users,” others to especially “innovative” consumers.

I just read
Dave Hamel's post, "
Retail Categories With No Facebook Fans: What To Do", and he really framed social media strategy in a way I may not have done yet, despite my efforts.
You see, there are levels of engagement for businesses:
Level 1: Social media is not something I'm interested in.
Level 2: I'm interested in social media…

If you’re a retailer in a category that has low consumer engagement, where purchase is very infrequent and there’s little consumer affiliation with your brand, there is a strong possibility that you don’t have a lot of Facebook fans with whom to communicate.
For you, this part of social media is - feh.
The mattress category is a great example. I don’t know how often a normal person buys a mattress, but for me it’s less often than a car. Maybe even less often than a house. So, why would I want…

In a recent
piece I wrote for the McKinsey Quarterly, I argue that companies should prepare now for the day when Web 2.0 morphs into Web 3.0.
Let me know what you think.

Congrats to richleutz22 - winner of the

eLab eXchange members did an excellent job predicting the web traffic to both Fox Interactive and YouTube. The overall prediction for Fox Interactive was within 1% of the actual growth!
However, despite the growth in traffic to Fox and YouTube, Hulu actually showed a 2% decli…

Someone feel free to tell me where this is from:
I heard about a sign saying,
Price, Quality, Time. Choose Two.
Now, in today's world with overnight shipping, mass production, and other huge technological advances, many companies are shooting for all three.
Other companies who are una…

I find that I'm becoming a confirmed Yelper. I used Yelp when I was driving to the Bay Area and got a chip in my window shield. Yelp helped me find an auto glass shop with good prices and good services who fixed my car window for free when I mentioned Yelp!
Yelp helped me find out where to go if I wa…

Hoffman, Donna L., Praveen Kopalle, and Thomas P. Novak, "The “Right” Consumers for Better Concepts: Identifying and Using Consumers High in Emergent Nature to Further Develop New Product Concepts" (June 9, 2009
While much research has emphasized improving current new product concept techniques, little work has focused on trait-based approaches that specify which consumers are the “right” ones to use in the new product development process, particularly in the consumer goods industry. We propose…

A while ago, the fad went around the internet that
content is king! This meant that content was the most important aspect of your website. It attracts eyeballs and generates interest. If your content is consistently stellar, then people will consume it, spread it, and come back for more. Also, as seen in the link above, content is valuable to your…

Not so long ago, in the land of brick-and-mortar stores, many businesses sought to be "the third place". The concept is that, if home is the first place, and work is the second place, then a good gathering place for the community is the third place. It's no accident that so many bookstores have coff…

Will
Twitter Rule the World?
Rising along side of the social networking revolution, Twitter, the short message and microblogging service, has become nearly as popular as social network sites like
Facebook. With China blocking Twitter on the anniversary of Tienanmen Square, and
Time magazine publishing a "how-to," it's fair to say that Twitt…
