11 Things to Skip in Social Media in 2011

1. It’s-all-about-me blog posts

2. Being anti-everything

If there’s one thing the social media world needs less of, it’s the Kumbaya sunshine-and-roses atmosphere. But if all you do is criticize what other people are doing — without offering new, alternative ideas — you haven’t done much more than take out the…

Poking the Government: Social Media and The Revolution in Egypt

Jon Stewart followers may have already heard this quip on "The Daily Show" days ago:  "If two speeches and a social media site is all we needed to spread democracy then why did we invade Iraq, why didn’t we just, I don’t know, poke them." It's a funny and cynical take on the power of social media to topple governments that had me laughing outloud. But with that said, I still wouldn't outright dismiss the utility of a Facebook post or tweet in the recent Egyptian…

Marketing in the cloud, new technologies for an old technique

We have seen many technological changes to marketing over the past hundred years, but there has been no greater change, albeit an annoying one, than what came with the invention of the telephone.  While no one enjoys getting that annoying sales call just when you are just sitting down for dinner, it has been a tried and true method for reaching potential customers. With the creation of the National Do Not Call Registry, however, it has become more difficult for businesses to reach out to new…

Mark Manalang likes "Mark Zuckerberg as TIME's Person of the Year"

As you may have already heard, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was recently named Person of the Year by TIME Magazine. (I suppose I should give up on my delusions that I will be named Person of the Year again, as I was back in 2006; that was of course when "You" won the honors). There's been quite a bit of vitriol on the net since the announcement, which has me quite dumbfounded. Perhaps I…

The Groupon Craze

As you may have heard in the news, there's this little company called Groupon that recently generated quite a bit of buzz over (eventually failed) acquisition talks with Google. Admittedly, I'd never even heard of the company until just a few weeks ago when one of my bosses at the UCR business school gave me the heads up. Word is that it's the next big thing, and businesses should leverage it as part of their online marketing strategy.

Dubious but curious as to…

The Beauty of Social Gaming: Farmville, Mafia Wars, and Beyond

I love video games, but gaming for me has always been a solitary activity. It's me vs. the computer/console. And being an introvert, I rather prefer it this way. Social gaming, as you can imagine, has never been my forte, though I have in the past dabbled at the behest of friends and family. Actually, by dabbling I mean I started up a FarmVille farm only to abandon it a week or so later; I am currently unaware of that farm's current fate (given the current state of things, maybe it… Continue

Blog Spam: The Electronic Barbarians at the Gate

Like everyone else in the world, I hate spam. There are obvious reasons of course for holding the floodgates against these viruses that feed off your blog and that grow ever stronger with each visitor it lures from your site at your expense. For one, they can detract from a company's social media message. They can ever soil a company's public appearance. (A crude link to a porn site will do the trick against any demure business). So safeguarding against them, however frustrating, is… Continue

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington A-Tweeting and A-Friending

Ah, I love election years. As a writer, I'm drawn to the drama of it all, the plot twists, the backroom deals, the political preening and strategizing, the populist appeals to outrage toward the status quo, and of course the sometimes-surprising election results themselves. But most importantly, I love election years because they require MY participation. Which is exactly why I think social media has naturally become a more integral part of political campaigns in recent years. Got… Continue

BP: I Still Don't Trust You, But You're Looking Good Social Media-Wise

In my last blog post, I glibly indicated BP and its oil spill should move over as I made my case about strategic Web 2.0 leaks. This time though I'm taking back that rhetorical move and placing the energy giant that I shoved to the side smack dab in the middle of the spotlight.

For those living under a rock for the past few weeks, BP is the cause of that big…

Forget the BP Oil Spill; Think Web 2.0 Strategic Leaks

I have to admit that I have never seen an episode of "Lost." Yet I joined the 13 or so millions of viewers who tuned in to the show's series finale on Sunday night. Normally I try to keep myself from any and all spoilers planted on the Web by my East Coast cousins. But not heeding this article, I told myself "Oh, what the heck" right at the episode's onset and proceeded to go on forums and blogs to get the juicy details on what… Continue

LinkedIn-essential?

LinkedIn has been on my mind lately, mostly because at my other job managing electronic communications for a business school, I’ve been tasked with launching a LinkedIn group for our new alumni. Commencement is just around the corner, and the objective is to make sure we have a user-friendly (and professional-looking) system in place for keeping connected with our graduates. (The thing I love about being a research assistant for the Sloan Center for Internet Retailing is that what I… Continue

Closing the (Face)book on Privacy And How It Affects FB Marketing Campaigns

Facebook blog post image - Mark Manalang Now I’m no Luddite (I do work at an Internet retailing research center after all), but when it comes to Facebook, I tend to dip my toes in that social networking site’s waters rather gingerly and suspiciously. And no, it’s not to do with the wading through mindless status updates (I did this; I did that; now I’m doing this; maybe I’ll do that). Rather it’s the privacy issue that keeps me from full immersion.

Facebook made the headlines again with another of its blunders on… Continue

Web 2.0 for B2B

Last summer I wrote an article for the McKinsey Quarterly outlining the key issues managers need to think about as they develop social media strategy and summarizing our LEAD model. After that article appeared I got a lot of requests for a piece that would specifically address how our LEAD model applies given the unique challenges B2B managers face. I put together this… Continue
