Your Social Media Efforts - Goals = Useless

Are you just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks? I spoke to someone in an organization the other day who said:

"We have a Facebook, because people said we should have one, because they see other people who have one.

But are you trying to reach the demographics of Facebook? Do you know that the majority of Facebook is 18-24 years of age, but 35-54 year olds are joining at an accelerated rate? What is your Facebook for?

Do you have goals? What are your goals? Goals. Goals. Goals. I can't stress that enough.

Everyone wants to use the internet. It's the new tool, the big hype, but what are you using it for?

I use Twitter for the conversation and the news. I don't use FriendFeed because Twitter works for me.

I use Google Reader to keep up on blogs about social media, personal development, personal finance and XKCD. I don't use Yahoo! Pipes because I haven't found a use for all the filters yet.

I use Facebook because my entire extended family is on it now (as are my baby pictures!) and that's how we keep in touch. I use MySpace less now because the information I get there is not as relevant to me as it was before.

Develop a purpose. Use what works for you.
